A really good house is something that empowers you

Beautiful quote in the NZ Herald today from Chris Moller host of Grand Designs NZ.

“A really good house is something that empowers you as an individual or as a family, as a bunch of people, to live in a certain way. Say you lost your job, it empowers you to be able to make ends meet, maybe to retrain, to do all of that on the smell of an oily rag,”

“A house should help you to get well, it should be looking after your health and wellbeing, and it should make you feel really good in the morning.”

So I bought a yurt

So I bought a 6 metre yurt without canvas from an auction on TradeMe. The wall and roof poles are made from hazelnut harvested from an abandoned orchard and the crown and door are made from recycled rimu. This was all made by a man called Josh down in Christchurch. He built this a couple of years ago and it has been in storage since. He is now moving to Australia and lucky for me he decided to sell.

I was inspired to buy the yurt because my friendsĀ Keith and Maree are building yurts for themselves too. I have been observing for awhile and started helping recently with their build every Monday. From themĀ I have fallen in love with the idea and want to live in a yurt myself. I love the idea of living in a light, round building that has a small footprint both physically and environmentally.

There is still much work to be done. It needs a floor, canvas, a place to put it and I need to somehow get it from Christchurch to Auckland. I really look forward to working through all of these challenges and I feel super excited about building my own home.
